Berlin, B.Z. Kulturpreis: Just Someone Who Belongs There

Last night in Berlin, at the B.Z. Culture Prize, David Garrett arrived not as a performer, but simply as a guest — alongside Larissa Marolt. A presence that, in his own words, comes from something long-standing and real.
Interview
“We’ve been very close friends for 15 years… she invited me, and I was happy to come along.”

No violin. No program to present. No expectation to fill. Just the choice to be there.

He speaks about looking forward to seeing Elīna Garanča, about classical music still being “his field,” but also — more simply — about the pleasure of returning.

“It’s just wonderful to be here again… today, I’m just enjoying the spectacle from the audience.”

And maybe that’s what makes this moment interesting. Because when an artist steps away from the role, even briefly, what remains is not absence, but perspective. A different kind of presence. Less defined, but perhaps more revealing.

Just someone who belongs there — without needing to prove it.
