If You Were There, You Already Know

There are evenings you don’t remember so much as carry. A year on, I still feel that one in Salzburg in my chest before I can find it in my mind — the hush before the first note, the candlelight, the way the whole room seemed to lean toward the stage and forget to breathe. We wrote then that some concerts refuse to dissolve. This is the proof: it never left, and now it’s coming back.

Benefit Concert · Salzburg

It’s official. David Garrett returns to the KlangBlickMomente benefit concert in the Großer Saal of the International Mozarteum Foundation in Salzburg — the same hall, the same reason, a new programme. Hold this date close: 12 September 2026.

And remember what the night is really for. Every cent raised goes to the Österreichische Kinder-Krebs-Hilfe — Austria’s Childhood Cancer Aid. Last year that quiet, golden room turned its applause into €251,639 for children fighting cancer and the families who never leave their side. That is the thing I keep coming back to: for one evening, beauty was put entirely in service of a child’s chance. The music was breathtaking. What it was for is what made it unbearable, in the best way.

The evening is gathering again around faces we love. Kevin Conners returns as tenor and host, holding the night together from the stage; Emanuel Graf returns with his cello; and new voices and pianists are taking their places around them. At the heart of it, once more, a single violin and the man who plays it as if he were telling the truth.

As for what he’ll play, David Garrett gave us the first whisper himself:

“We will be performing Brahms’ Violin Sonata No. 3 in D minor, and perhaps add some pieces from my upcoming album.”

Of the three Brahms sonatas, the Third — the D-minor, Op. 108 — is the one that storms: four movements that plead, ache, and finally rise like a tide you can’t hold back. And those “perhaps” pieces from a record not yet released? It means part of this night may be heard, for now, nowhere else on earth. Just there. Just then. Just us.

The tickets are already on sale, and I’ll tell you plainly: some of us from The Strings Society will be in those seats — front row, hearts in our throats, the way you sit when you know something rare is about to happen close enough to touch. If you can reach Salzburg on the twelfth of September, come. Sit with us. And if you can’t — we’ll keep the feeling safe, and carry every bit of it back to you here, the way we did before.
